Life Boat

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

A lifeboat is a small watercraft carried on a ship to provide a means of emergency evacuation in the event of a disaster aboard the ship. Lifeboats may be rigid or inflatable vessels; the inflatable type are sometimes referred to as liferafts. In the military, a lifeboat may be referred to as a whaleboat, dinghy, or gig. The ship’s tenders of modern cruise ships are often designed to double as lifeboats and “lifeboat drills” are a part of the cruise experience.

Inflatable lifeboats may be equipped with auto-inflation (carbon dioxide or nitrogen) canisters or mechanical pumps. A quick release and pressure release mechanism is fitted on board ships so that the canister or pump automatically inflates the lifeboat, and the lifeboat breaks free of the sinking vessel. Commercial aircraft are also required to carry auto-inflating life rafts in case of an emergency water landing, and are also kept on offshore platforms.

Ship-launched lifeboats are designed to be lowered from davits on a ship’s deck, and are unsinkable, with buoyancy that cannot be damaged. The cover serves as protection from sun, wind and rain, can be used to collect rainwater, and is normally made of a reflective or fluorescent material that is highly-visible. Lifeboats are usually equipped with flares and/ or mirrors for signaling, several days’ worth of food and water, basic first aid supplies and oars. Some lifeboats are even more capably equipped to permit self-rescue; containing such supplies as a radio, an engine and/ or sail, heater, basic navigational equipment, solar water stills, rainwater catchments and fishing equipment.

Liferafts in general are collapsible, and stored in a heavy-duty fiberglass canister, and also contain some high-pressure gas to allow automatic inflation to the operations size. SOLAS and military regulations require these to be sealed, never opened by the ship’s crew, they are removed at a set periodicity and sent to a certified facility to open and inspect the liferaft and contents. In contrast, a lifeboat is open, regulations require a crewmember to inspect it periodically and ensure all required equipment is present.

Most modern Lifeboats have some form of a motor; liferafts usually do not have a motor. Large lifeboats require some form of a davit or launching system (there might be multiple lifeboats on one), and that does require human intervention to commence or be involved in the launch process. Thus, launch of lifeboat is longer and has higher risk of failure due to human factor, however, lifeboats don’t suffer from inflation system failures like liferafts.

Recently, smaller self-rescue lifeboats have been introduced for use by boats with fewer people aboard: these are rigid dinghies with CO2-inflated exposure canopies and other safety equipment. Like the lifeboats used before the advent of the gasoline engine, these self-rescue dinghies are designed to let the passengers propel themselves to safety by sailing or rowing. In addition to their use as proactive lifeboats, these self-rescue dinghies are also meant to function as yacht tenders.

Different Types of Playground Equipment

Hanging apparatus usually conjures up memories of those hours spent trying to master the monkey bars as a child. Monkey bars remain one of the most challenging pieces of playground equipment and are now available in a variety of lengths of solid bars, inflatable bouncers, swinging trapeze, parallel bars and up and over bars. These pieces of equipment help children build up their upper body strength as well as providing a sense of achievement once they have completed them.

Climbing playground equipment is by far the most popular type of apparatus. Climbing frames remain one of the most popular pieces due to their vast variety of shapes, sizes and challenges. From the traditional jungle gym to the web climbers, rock climbing walls and net traverse, there is something to keep children constantly entertained as well as helping them exercise without knowing it!

How to Choose a Suitable Tent for Family Camping

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Camping is an outdoor recreational activity. Camping as a recreational activity became popular in the early 20th century. The participants, known as campersenjoy nature while spending one or several nights, usually at a campsite, which may have cabins. Camping may involve the use of a tent, a primitive structure, or no shelter at all. Campers frequent national parks, other publicly owned natural areas, and privately owned campgrounds. Camping is also used as a cheap form of accommodation for people attending large open air events such as sporting meetings and music festivals.

Family camping is always a fun activity. You can get to bond with your kids and share stories. With the increasing popularity of camping, different companies have started producing tents of different sizes to suit different family sizes.

Choosing the right tent size for your family can be very tricky. Sometimes what the companies advertise are not consistent with the product. Do not let photos fool you. Here are some tips to help you choose the right tent size for your camping trips with your family.

1. You need to determine how many people and how much gear and equipments you will be traveling with. Tent sizes differ. There are 2 man tents, 3 man tents and so on. The numbers tell the maximum capacity of each tent or more precisely, how many persons can sleep inside, shoulder to shoulder, without any room for personal stuffs. While this rating method may be sensible enough for backpackers who are used to traveling light, it’s not advisable for family trips. If you want to get a more realistic tent capacity, divide the rating by two. For instance, most 2 man tents are only comfortable for one person, and four man tents for two adults and perhaps, two very small children.

2. You should allocate 0 square feet of floor space for each person. This is, of course, not possible if you want to travel lighter. However, if you planned for a longer camping trip, the square foot allocated for each person should be higher.

3. If you do not want to be crammed up in a space during your camping trip, you need to allocate space. For instance, if you are seven feet tall, you need a space of at least feet in order to stretch. As for width, you need two and a half feet for a more comfortable sleep. That would be approximately 20 square feet. Most 2 man tents are five by seven feet. Ten by ten foot tent is only ideal for two adults, hence 5×7 tents can fit smaller kids comfortably.

4. You need to check for tents that will give you enough space for clothing and standing up. Of course, this is only advised if you plan to camp longer to provide you with a more livable situation. If you plan to get 2 man tents, you need to see the actual tent and check if you can stand up inside.

Safety Mats

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Mats are a kind of largely used products in our daily life. They can be used on playground equipment, in kindergarten, in your rooms and so on. Except the decorative function, to make the environment safe is an important item in its functions. Safety mats are those products, which can cater to your need both in decoration and safety. In the markets, there are outdoor gym flooring safety mats, check shape safety mats,  bright color safety mats, garden check flooring safety mats, puzzle soft safety mats, numbered safety mats, alphabet table safety mats, double color garden safety mats, garden brick size safety mats, square appearance flooring safety mats and so on.

As we all know, kids like playing on playground. But as parents, do you realize the potential danger of the playground? It is estimated that there are over 200,000 children are injured in playground accidents.  So choosing proper safety mats become especially important.

Sand is not a ideal surface. Because kids playing on it can easily remove the sand from the needed area. Sand can also get into children’s eyes and cause irritation.

Wood fill or mulch is often used but this method requires continual maintenance and needs to be raked to prevent low spots. Once a low spot occurs, safety cushion the mulch provides is greatly reduced. Rubber mulch and pellets are a little better but also require constant maintenance to prevent dangerous low or bald spots.

Safety mats that are recommended for playground are rubber playground mats and tiles, as is named safety mats. You can get safety mats and tiles from 1″ to 4 1/4″ in thickness. How thick the safety mats exactly should be depends on how tall the devices are on the playground. These safety mats not only look great but most important, for they can greatly cut down the number of playground fall injuries and protect those precious little ones.

Another occasion where safety mats are largely used is in bathroom. As you know, the floor on the bathroom must be very slippery once it is wet. So it is very easy to slide down and to be a danger to the youth and old. Safety mats can greatly reduce these injures. They have several advantages. Firstly, safety mats are quickly drying, safety mats can dry up within 15-20 minutes on an average. Secondly, safety mats are absorbent: This is the prime purpose of the safety mats, and most shower mats fulfill this criterion adequately, except rubber mats. Thirdly, safety mats are fungus resistant: safety mats that dry faster will also resist fungus better. Rubber mats are most resistant, while bamboo mats follow closely. Cotton mats are not fungus resistant, and hence need to be washed frequently in hot water. Fourthly, safety mats should also be comfortable to the feet: This is another point to be noted.

What’s more, safety mats are also used in PE field. Such as yoga mats, jumping mats and so on. Anyhow, as be named, the most important point for safety mats is to ensure people’s safety in daily life and in doing sports.

Playground

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

A playground or play area is a place with a specific design for children be able to play there. It may be indoors but is typically outdoors (where it may be called a tot lot in some regions.)

Modern playgrounds often have recreational equipment such as the see-saw, merry-go-round, swingset, slide, jungle gym, chin-up bars, sandbox, spring rider, monkey bars, overhead ladder, trapeze rings, playhouses, and mazes, many of which help children develop physical coordination, strength, and flexibility, as well as providing recreation and enjoyment. Common in modern playgrounds are “play structures” that link many different pieces of equipment.

Playgrounds often also have facilities for playing informal games of adult sports, such as a baseball diamond, a skating arena, a basketball court, or a tether ball.

“Public” playground equipment refers to equipment intended for use in the play areas of parks, schools, child care facilities, institutions, multiple family dwellings, restaurants, resorts, and recreational developments, and other areas of public use.

A type of playground called a playscape is designed to provide a safe environment for play in a natural setting.

Professionals recognize that the social skills that children develop on the playground become lifelong skill sets that are carried forward into their adulthood. Independent research concludes that playgrounds are among the most important environments for children outside the home. Most forms of play are essential for healthy development, but free, spontaneous play—the kind that occurs on playgrounds—is the most beneficial type of play.

Children have devised many playground games and pastimes. But because playgrounds are usually subject to adult supervision and oversight, young children’s street culture often struggles to fully thrive there. Research by Robin Moore (Childhood’s Domain: Play and Place, 1986) has clearly shown that playgrounds need to be balanced with marginal areas that (to adults) appear to be derelict or wasteground but to children they are area’s that they can claim for themselves, ideally a wooded area or field.

A type of playground called a playscape can provide children with the necessary feeling of ownership that Moore describes above. Playscapes can also provide parents with the assurance of their child’s safety and wellbeing, which may not be prevalent in an open field or wooded area.

Playgrounds can be

* Built by collaborative support of corporate and community resources to achieve an immediate and visible “win” for their neighborhood.
* Public, free of charge, like at most rural elementary schools
* A business with an entrance fee
* Connected to a business, for customers only, e.g., at McDonald’s and IKEA.
* Elaborate indoor mazes, like those at the (now defunct) Discovery Zone, Zoom Zoom’s Indoor Playground in Ancaster, Ontario, Jungle Jam Indoor Playground and Chuck E. Cheese’s

Early attempts of inflatable boats

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Inflatable boats may have rubber floors, either plain or inflatable, or they may include steel, wood or aluminium sheets for rigidity. The tubes are made of rubberised, synthetic sheets of Hypalon or PVC to provide light-weight and secure buoyancy. The tubes are often constructed in separate sections, each with a valve to add or remove air, to reduce the effect of a puncture.

Some inflatable boats have an inflated keel to create a “groove” along the line of the hull improving the hull’s wave cutting and turning performance. Due to the lightness, it is easy to cause an inflatable boat to start hydroplaning, thus making it faster than the engine would allow when the hull is operating in displacement mode.

A growing use for inflatables is for white water rafting and kayaking, as well as in river, lake and ocean touring. Professional-level rafts and kayaks have existed for many years; since the late 1990s, more affordable inflatable rafts, kayaks (including sea kayaks) and canoes have been developed by European and North American companies. Typically these inflatable boats contain no rigid frame members, so they can be deflated, folded and stored in compact bags.
here are ancient carved images of animal skins filled with air being used as one-man floats to cross rivers. They were inflated by mouth. Sometimes these images have been wrongly described as ancient scuba.

The discovery of the process to vulcanize rubber was made by Charles Goodyear, in 1838. Vulcanization stabilized the rubber allowing it to be both durable and flexible. Shortly thereafter several people expanded on experimentation of rubber coated fabrics.

In 1839 the Duke of Wellington tested the first inflatable pontoons.

In 1844 - 1845, British naval officer Lieutenant Peter Halkett developed two types of inflatable boats intended for use by Arctic explorers. Both were made of rubber-impregnated “Mackintosh cloth.” The “boat cloak” served as a waterproof poncho or cloak until inflated, when it became a one-man boat. A special pocket held bellows for inflation, and a blade to turn a walking stick into a paddle. A special umbrella could double as a sail. Halkett also developed a two man boat which was carried in a knapsack, and could also serve as a waterproof groundsheet. Halkett’s boats were used extensively for Arctic exploration, including several of the expeditions mounted to search for Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition.

In 1848 General George Cullum, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, introduced a rubber coated fabric inflatable bridge pontoon which was used in the Mexican-American War and later on to a limited extent during the American Civil War.

By 1855 there were numerous types of inflatable rubber boats in use, some made by Goodyear in the U.S. and other surprisingly modern looking boats by the Thomas Hancock Company in Britain.

The U.S. Navy was using inflatable life rafts by 1863 onboard the armored ironclad warships of the Passaic Monitor class.

In 1866 four men crossed the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Britain on a three tube raft called Nonpariel.

Three Aspects of Swing Sets to Focus on

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

There is few play sets can bring kids the happiness of  swing sets bring. Just remind the swinging up and down as a bird flying freely, bathing in the sunset or watching the day go by. Joyful experience is taken by qualified sets. To get a nice swing sets, the following tree point need to be kept in mind.

The material of the swing sets
There are sets made of different materials, including metal, wood, plastic, etc. Your first consideration will be the wood. There are a variety of different types and depending on where you live, you will want to find wood that can handle your climate. One of the most popular woods used is Cedar. On one hand, it has a natural resistance to pests, the other aspect,  it wears very well in all climates. Other options include redwood or teak.

Size of the swing sets
When it comes to size of your swing seat, you’ll have to take into consideration how large your garden or porch is. You will also want to think about whether you will need a supporting frame, or if you have a structure that you can hang it from. Pergolas are very popular and they are ideal structures for hanging your swing from. You will have the option of a one, two or three seater ranging from two foot side all the way to six foot wide, so think about how many family members you want to have on it at one time or if you want to be able to lie down on it, will the length be enough.

Styles to Suit You
Finally when it comes to style, there are so many different ones to choose from. You could choose a square or rounded design and may want to customize it to suit your other garden or porch furniture. No matter what design you choose you will be able to find both plans and pre-made garden swing seats in your price range.

Don’t forget to look for a faith worthy manufacture, so that the quality and safety of your swings can be sured.  And with a professional swing manufacturer, you can also get the swing sets that are made according to your own style and design. Just imagine, having a unique swing in your garden, how wonderful it is!

Five steps to build a seesaw

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I think most of us have played seesaws. It  is a kind of simple  playground equipment board with a long slim plank that is perched in the center so that the ends will move up and down when weight is put on the other end. A rider sits on each end and pushes their feet against the ground in their turn and then lifting end up into the air dropping the other end to the ground. Seesaws generally have handles in front rider sitting on each end for holding while the seesaw moves up and down. It is easy to build a seesaw; it is as simple as the steps explained below.

Following things are needed:
- Screws and bolts
- Sand and cement
- Water
- Padding
- Staples
- U-clamp and post anchors
- Covering material
- Metal tubing or 2″ X 8″ stock
- Metal U-frame or post stock
- Shovel, level, tape measure, hammer, pencil/paper, metal drill, staple gun and wood.

Step One:
First, a solid foundation must be constructed for the seesaw. The area of ground should be leveled about 20´x 20´ and two holes should be dug in the center which should be at least six feet deep and one foot wide. The tubes should be set into the holes. The peak of the tube should be kept about 3″ below the ground. Now the anchor has to be connected to allow perpendicular supports.

Step Two:
Now when the foundations have been finished, it is time to build the posts. It requires one-piece metal U-post system or simply two vertical posts joined by a metal pipe which should be bolted on the ends to a wooden of steel post system. The posts should be attached to the foundation. When the posts have been attached, the concrete, sand and water mix should be poured into the holes and around the posts. It has to be made sure that the posts are exactly on right angles to the surface. The concrete should be given 24 hours to set before attaching the posts to the foundation.

Step Three:
Now the length of the lever has to be decided. Wood or metal can be used but the lever needs to be wrapped with padding and if wood is selected, a metal strip has to be fastened to the base of the stock to provide firmness. Now the holes have to be bored for the seat on both ends.

Step Four:
This step requires the handles to be placed by drilling a hole in the level arm about the size of 18″ - 24″ from the end of the lever. Another hole has to be drilled in a 1″ x 2″ piece of stock. The vertical beam has to be now attached into the parallel lever and then the cross piece has to be added to the upright beam as a handle. At the both sides of the seesaw, a piece of foam covered with leather should be attached leather to serve as seats.

Step Five:
Lastly, the sharp edges of foundation, lever, handles etc should be sanded down. Now the seesaw can be painted using non-lead based paint.
